I guess this stuff really started in 1997 with my first computer, a lovely Pentium II 166! Combined with my very first sound module, a Yamaha MU50 I managed to create some very basic general midi type drum and bass, sadly unrecorded and unarchived (I hope)! I was already into using computers to write music since composing incidental music for plays at school for about five years running.

Back then it was Notator on the Atari, several computers later and my system is hardcore! Through work with Snow Crash and my penchant for drum and bass, my music combines rock, funk, electronica, drum and bass, hip hop, jungle, and chilled tunes.

It’s all about beautiful harmonies and the interplay of layered drum samples, sometimes I guess the Classical education comes through, but mostly I like telling stories with music.

Friday Flash

Oh no, you cry, here he is with yet another new feature!

Is he jumping on another trend, shamelessly straining for more traffic, or just pointlessly blathering? Or is this merely a useful exercise in order to improve his writing skills?

I hope it is the latter, with added charm and inspiration. Each Friday I will publish a short, self-contained story of between 300 - 500 words. Each Friday, because otherwise it wouldn't be Flash Fiction Friday then, would it? 300-500 words is nothing, when you have a story to tell, so it is a good test of trimming out all the crap and quickly getting to the meat of the thing.

The first instalment, entitled "Wormhole", is an idea I've been playing around with, with a view to becoming a much larger story later on. Hope you enjoy it!

Stu has a "special" talent, also see: Right to Think , a sort of ranty blogsite, if you will.

Seekers Cover

Every twenty years, the children go missing.

Billy is a 7 year-old synesthete with a secret: He can stop time. Somehow, somebody knows and they are after him. With the help of a strangely well-connected neighbour and family friend, he manages to escape and grows up living off the grid, learning how to protect children across the country, training with an organisation calling themselves the Hunters.

Little Kathy is also a Synee. In 1989 she creates Unicorn, the most advanced AI the world has ever seen. Inevitably she ends up working for the Company, whose credits include inventing a cure for the common cold.

Balan is a cold-blooded killer. No-one knows where HE comes from.

Twenty years later the Seekers return, and Billy and Kathy find themselves on opposing sides of a war that threatens to transform humanity itself. Will Unicorn help them? Who is the Man in Black? Will Billy have to make the ultimate sacrifice? Will Kathy have to help him? Where are their parents in all of this?

Updating weekly in approximately 1,000-word instalments, usually over the weekend.

Enjoy!

I go to a lot of gigs.

I try to go to at least one a week.

Sometimes I take my camera: See my Flickr

While I am at work I try to form my opinions into words.

Sometimes I like the bands, sometimes I don't.

I don't believe in saying 'not my cup of tea' or 'I like their drummer'.

I believe in honesty and music that makes me emotional in some way.

October 1996 - April 1997

This book details my experience as a teaching 'missionary'for USPG , and the trials and tribulations of being dumped in a strange (and wonderful) country with very little support when you're just out of school.

I filled three books with scribblings, lovingly handmade by my sister and they were a lifesaver for the really stressful times.

What you will read here are uncut transcripts (with addendums and footnotes as other things spring to mind) of what happened three years ago.

I haven't been able to get hold of C. to ask his permission to write my deepest thoughts and feelings about him, so if you find this, C., I hope this doesn't offend!

Tom Johnson Imaginary Music No. 65

It had to start sometime, I don't know how long I can keep this up but we'll see I guess... You all know how much I love the music, well I think it's about time I started writing about it properly.

Not necessarily albums, CD's singles or anything, I'll write what I hear, what I feel, what I'm listening to at the moment, what makes me hurl...

Enjoy!
